3. Winchester - I’ve been curious about this one for awhile. There’s nothing I love more than a period horror movie, and the fact that more movies haven’t made use of the Winchester house is honestly really surprising. I do remember hearing that the movie had pretty abysmal reviews, and after seeing it, I don’t really see why. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a fantastic movie. The plot is a fairly generic haunted house store with the twist of the whole Winchester house backstory, but I’ve seen some truly terrible horror movies and this was not it. Basic plot aside, the acting was decent and the characters were likable for the most part. The 90 minutes is worth it just for the house though. I’m an absolute sucker for a beautiful set, and with any good haunted house movie the house is just as much a character as any of the people in the movie.
4. The Lodge - Not bad. Very art house and very slow burn, but I still liked it. I’ve been intrigued by this one since I saw the trailers back in the Before Times. Yet another case of me being drawn in by the visuals, the starkness of the lodge and the utter bleakness of the snowbound landscape were gorgeous. There’s not much I can say about the movie that won’t spoil it, but I feel like I’m learning to appreciate art house horror a bit more. Very few art house movies are things that I really love or would necessarily ever rewatch, but I’m starting to enjoy them for what they are.
