The most blessed season of the year is upon us! The season where the leaves change, or at least the temperatures dip down into a chilly 80 degrees here in Texas. The scent of pumpkin spice fills the air, and our government tries to make The Purge a reality.

Was I expecting to start my annual traditions six months into the plague? Not so much.

Haunted houses are out this year, and that breaks my demonic little heart, but nothing will stop THIS tradition.

Grab yourself a pumpkin beer, turn off the lights, and get cozy. Not like any of us are going anywhere right now anyway.

Let’s get spooky!

1. 1BR - This one was recommended by one of my very favorite people, Aaron Hefler. This popped up in my suggested list on Netflix, but it looks like a fairly generic home invasion/creepy neighbor movie so I didn’t really think much of it until Aaron told me how amazing it was. Lots of twists that I wasn’t expecting, and it had a fairly satisfying ending. Overall, a great start to the month!

OCTOBER RECAP

I did amazingly well this month with my choices. While a decent handful of my choices fell into the category of “I was entertained for 90 minutes but I wouldn’t rewatch,” I’m not mad about that. Out of my 31 movies, I only thought one was utter garbage and that was “The Open House.”

I watched a ton of Netflix originals and the vast majority of them were good, and a few were spectacular. “Final Girls,” “The Ritual,” “Crawl,” and “The Perfection” all get top marks, but the winner this month is still “Apostle” by a huge margin. Fantastic all around and a movie that will most definitely be making it into my revised top 31.

Now it’s time to turn on my annual rewatch of “Trick R Treat” and then break out the dark glasses and leather pants for my Crowley ensemble tonight.

Happy Halloween!

28. The Possession of Hannah Grace - In all honesty, I watched this because I like Shay Mitchell. On the whole, it was a fairly predictable but decent enough possession movie. Shay Mitchell was great in it, and the visual effects with Hannah were very creepy. I doubt this will make it into the rewatch file but it was still watchable.

29. The Wind - Very much a slow burn, but the tension was excellent. The non-linear narrative meant that you really had to give this one your full attention. This reminded me a lot of the Babadook without the indescribably annoying child that ruined that entire movie for me.

30. The Girl With All The Gifts - Really liked this one. My horror BFF Aaron Hefler loves the book so I wanted to check this out, and I wasn’t disappointed. Unique take on the whole “zombie outbreak” genre and the young actress that played Melanie was great. I’m definitely going to check out the book.

26. Zombieland: Double Tap - Loved it! The first Zombieland is a favorite of mine. It’s one of the first movies I saw when I moved to Austin, so I have a lot of nostalgia for it. And it is utterly blowing my mind that it’s ten years ago! The sequel definitely wasn’t as magical as the first movie, but it was still a blast. And Woody Harrelson can still get it.

27. Wounds - Body horror is probably one of my least favorite sub-genres of horror. It’s the type of horror that I find the most viscerally unpleasant which means it’s effective, but it also means that they only body horror movie I’ve ever rewatched is “American Mary.” This one was quite good but deeply unsettling. The whole cast was filled with fairly unlikeable characters, and the movie doesn’t try to make you muster up any sympathy for them. You just sit back and watch as they barrel toward their own destruction.

24. Mom and Dad - Let me start off by saying I HATE Nicholas Cage. I think he’s one of the worst actors out there. But in this movie, he was perfect because he got to be his overacting, batshit crazy self. This movie was balls to the walls insane, and it worked. And the kids were such shits that you really wanted Nicholas Cage and Selma Blair to murder them.

25. Brightburn - I missed this in the theaters earlier this year, but I really liked it. The idea of a Superman type character who was pure evil is a pretty creative idea, and the kid played unfeeling sociopath eerily well. The gory scenes were impressive too. I legit had to look away during one scene.

So the last two movies have pretty much validated my childfree life choices!

21. The First Purge - LOVED this one. I’ve enjoyed the other offerings in this franchise but this was the best by a huge margin. I always want to see the origin of the dystopia so I’ve been waiting for this installment.

SHOCKER, the ultra-right-wing party of psychos decides to clear out the undesirables that are overwhelmingly poor people of color. Was the imagery a bit heavy-handed at times? Sure. But you know what’s not usually particularly subtle? That level of bigotry.

The musical choices of playing old spirituals while men dressed in the uniforms of institutions of power (police and military) and racism (KKK and Nazis) hunted unarmed citizens guilty of the crime of being poor was incredibly effective.

This made me want to rewatch the other two with the insight from the origin story.

22. Eli - Quite liked this one. It had a good, creepy setting and the kid was a decent actor. Definitely did not see the twist at the ending coming at all!

23. Jigsaw - I unironically love the Saw movies for the ridiculous Final Destination level traps. With the exception of the first, are the movies actually GOOD? Not particularly. But they always keep me entertained and I continue to be impressed by the way details weave together across all eight movies.

19. Crawl - I’m back from my New Orleans trip (pics coming soon), and back into my horror countdown. I LOVED this. Disaster movies and killer animal movies are some of my favorite sub-genres and this one had both. The characters were likable and didn’t make a bunch of dumb decisions, and I was thoroughly entertained. This one is definitely going in the rewatch file.

20. Before I Wake - Damn, what’s with horror movies giving me all the feels this month? This wasn’t one of those movies that is borderline as to whether it really counts as horror, but Netflix has it listed under horror so I’m still counting it even though it was more sad than scary. I liked the acting, the visuals were beautiful, and I enjoyed the ambiguity of the ending.

18. The Open House - This one’s going to be a no from me. I enjoy the whole home invasion sub-genre, but with this movie literally nothing happened until the last 20 minutes. We learn nothing about the killer. We never even see his face. And I’m all for “murder sprees are my self-care” being the killer’s motivation, but if you’re going to give me that little, I need the rest of the movie to be interesting. And this really really wasn’t. Hard pass.

16. The Silence - Surprisingly good film that’s sort of a cross between “The Mist” and “A Quiet Place” without the giant plot point that pissed me off so much about “A Quiet Place” (namely the idea that you know what would totally improve your life during the apocalypse and not at all get everyone killed? Having a baby when the monsters hunt based on sound.)

The cast was great, and no one made idiotic choices that made me want them to get eaten. I totally would have shot that creepy priest in the head though. Gotta love that the church even has to co-op the apocalypse. All in all, I’d rewatch this one.

17. Little Evil - Fun little horror comedy that’s basically a riff on The Omen. Not my favorite horror comedy out there, but it was definitely entertaining and the kid was super creepy. I just love how well horror translates into comedies.

13. Malevolent - Pretty standard fare of fake ghost hunters who scam people ending up in a house with real ghosts. I mainly watched it because the house it was set in looked cool, but the set wasn’t utilized to it’s potential at all. A bit of a twist at the end that kept it from being completely generic, but definitely not a movie I’d recommend.

14. The Golem - Surprisingly good little movie. A bit predictable, but there aren’t too many horror films out there that delve into Judaism so it’s always enjoyable to see something other than the usual demons and priests with more religious-themed horror.

15. Darling - Visually striking, but very art house. The film being in black and white, as well as the editing choices, definitely worked for this movie. It keeps a tight focus on a single character for 99% of the movie and has almost no dialogue. It feels a bit like a student film version of Hitchcock. It’s not something I’ll ever watch again, but I appreciate it for what it is.

11. Unsane - The idea of being involuntarily committed is pretty horrifying, and this was a decent enough film. The thing that drove me crazy was the beginning when she gets put on a 24-hour hold. FFS you’re there for 24 hours. Sit quietly and COMPLY and then get out and sue the place.

12. Hell Fest - I loved this, not because the plot was terribly unique or because the acting was great. It really wasn’t. But the location? An ultra-creepy horror theme park? SIGN ME UP. I’m pretty sure my reaction to the movie isn’t quite what a normal person would have because even after allllllll the murders, all I can think of is - I WANT TO GO!

10. The Perfection - This was stunning. The movie was an absolute roller coaster, and I never expected any of the many twists. Allison Williams is really carving out a name for herself with her horror roles. I can’t really think of anything else to say about this other than - perfection.

OCTOBER ORGY OF VIOLENCE 11 - RETURN TO BLOOD

9. Veronica - Solid possession movie by the same director as REC. Nothing terribly unique or groundbreaking, and I do not understand where all the chatter on Twitter about this being OMG THE SCARIEST MOVIE EVER came from. It had a few decent jump scares but it was like a 2/10 in terms of scariness.

It wasn’t a bad movie by any means though, and it did an excellent job of capturing the vibe of late 80s horror right down to the synth music.

8. I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House - I actually really liked this one which will surprise a lot of people who know me. The movie was slow and quiet and didn’t have much in the way of action for a large portion, but it also reminded me of everything I love about the Gothic Horror genre.

The voiceovers were creepy and poetic, and what the movie lacked in action it made up for in tension and atmosphere. Also I loved that house. New England farmhouses are my favorite, even with the murderous ghosts.

6. Tragedy Girls - This one was trying to be a slasher movie crossed with Heathers with a hint of Jawbreaker. It was utterly ridiculous and kind of terrible but in an entertaining way. Definitely not for the rewatch list, but as someone who unabashedly curates her online persona, I can't be mad at them for wanting their murders to get retweets.

7. In The Tall Grass - I didn’t love this one which really surprised me. I’ve loved all the King adaptions lately, and Aaron described this movie as a cross between “Triangle” and “The Mist,” two movies I love. The first third of the movie just dragged so much that by the time any real action started I had already pretty much checked out.

I’ll probably give it a rewatch eventually because it’s King, but the only thing this movie did was remind me even more of how all the worthless square states in the middle of the country are trying to kill us.

5. Apostle - I loved this one. LOVED IT. I adore period horror films and there aren’t a huge amount of them period, let alone ones that are incredibly well done. I also didn't know Michael Sheen had a large role in this, so I might have shrieked AZIRAPHALE when his name popped up on the screen.

Seriously though, this was a fantastic movie. The 2+ hour run time didn’t feel long at all, the crazy cult story was fascinating enough before any of the supernatural elements showed up. So far, this is my favorite of the month. Absolutely going into the rewatch file and this might even make my top 31 in the future.

4. The Nun - I really really love the whole universe that started with The Conjuring. The Nun isn’t quite up to the level that The Conjuring and its sequel are, but I love a good possession movie plus all of the Catholic trappings lead to great creepy atmosphere. The early parts of the movie were scarier, but all in all it was a good addition to The Conjuring universe.

3. The Ritual - VERY impressed with this one. Visually stunning setting with a tense atmosphere that keeps ratcheting up. It really brought me back to watching Blair Witch the very first time and having those “did I see that?” moments.

ALSO THIS IS WHY YOU STAY ON THE TRAILS INSTEAD OF GOING JAUNTING THROUGH THE CREEPY SWEDISH FOREST.

2. The Final Girls - I LOVE horror comedies. I randomly picked this one on Netflix knowing absolutely nothing about it, and I didn’t expect to love it this much. Taissa Farmiga brought the perfect vulnerability to the role of Max, and the supporting cast was enjoyable too.

I was not, however, expecting a horror comedy to MAKE ME CRY AND GIVE ME ALL THE FEELS. I definitely identified a whole lot with Max. My Mom would have loved this movie.

Happy Halloween month everyone! Now that October has arrived you all know what it’s time for - lots and lots of horror movies!

This year marks year number 11 of my annual tradition, and I have tons of monsters and slashers on the docket for this month.

1. Terrifier - This movie was recommended by one of my very favorite people and someone who is pretty much my horror soulmate - Aaron Hefler. If Aaron tells me to watch something, I watch it.

This movie was a fairly ridiculous, absolute balls to the wall slasher movie. It gave me “The Collector” vibes, and I enjoyed that one too. This definitely isn’t DEEP MEANINGFUL CINEMA, but the deaths were inventive and the clown was creepy AF.
