4. Apostle - I’ve said it many times before but there’s nothing I love more than a period horror movie, and there aren’t nearly enough of them. Apostle was the undisputed favorite of 2019 for me, and it’s cemented a very high spot in my overall ranking. Michael Sheen as a scarily devout cult leader? Sign me up!

3. Cabin in the Woods - When it’s done well, meta-horror is a joy, and Cabin in the Woods does it VERY well. I knew nothing about this movie beyond “Joss Whedon” and “horror” when I saw this in the theater. I didn’t even watch the trailer and I love trailers. I just knew that I was going to adore this movie and I wanted to go in totally blind. And the “system purge” scene still remains one of my favorite scenes in any movie. Every time I watch it, I notice something new.

2. Pet Semetery (Original) - “Sometimes. . . dead is better.” I enjoyed the remake. I really did. But nothing will ever touch the original. This was the first Stephen King book I ever read, and the one I wanted to watch way too often when I was young. (Even though the Zelda scenes were one of the few things that really freaked me out. I think I looked away every time until I hit adulthood.) Plus Fred Gwynne is unparalleled as Judd.
